T cells of the gastrointestinal tract are characterized by mucosa-specific homing as well as responses biased towards tolerance. The project investigates the cellular and molecular regulation of the mucosa-specific homing- and chemokine receptors α4β7 and CCR9 by the gut environment. In addition, we study the crosstalk between microbiota of the gut with T cells, notable the question whether metabolites and components of commensal bacteria are able to induce regulatory T cells. Insights into these tolerance mechanisms might reveal novel strategies for the therapy of inflammatory diseases.
