Innate lymphoid cells and inflammatory bowel diseases

Inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) is mediated by dysfunctional immunity. IL-22 is an IL-10 family cytokine member specifically targeting mucosal tissues and was shown to be protective in IBD. IL-22 is produced not only by T cells but also by an emerging family of RORgammat+ innate lymphoid cells (ILC), which are mainly resident in the gut and have been shown to regulate IBD. In this lecture, we will provide an overview on phenotype and functions of different ILC populations, their activation requirements and their putative role in IBD. Finally, strategies to track and deplete selectively these subsets in IBD will be discussed.
